Rhizome Cafe Events – September

Written on September 1st, 2007 by Editorno shouts
September 1, 2007toSeptember 30, 2007

September at Rhizome Café * Community Space * Arts Venue
Since there are tons of events at Rhizome, I decided to post them in one go. Rhizome is a lesbian-owned business (and they have good food too.) For more information see the article about them a few issues back.

317 East Broadway, Vancouver

Dear Friends of Rhizome

During the month of September (and beyond, if it works out) we’re conducting a social and economic experiment—and you’re invited to participate! We’ve added an item to our menu called “Lentils are Everything Stew.” It’s the same (but even better) lentil stew we served at our anniversary event in July: French green lentils, potatoes, spinach and sundried tomatoes in a mint and lemon-scented stew; either vegan or sprinkled with feta cheese, and served with toasted bread.

The interesting thing about Lentils are Everything Stew is that we’re serving it on a “pay as you feel” basis.

We’re inspired by several small cafes in Australia called Lentil as Anything, where customers pay whatever they feel is fair for everything on the menu. The “pay as you feel” system is slightly different than just “pay as you can.” In deciding what to pay for your lentils, you can ask yourself: What is the value of Rhizome Café and the experience of eating here? What is the value of these ingredients, and the labour that produced, prepared and served them? How much do your financial circumstances allow you to pay? How does it feel to be part of a system that could make this food available to everyone, regardless of ability to pay?

Once you’ve decided what you should pay, you deposit your payment confidentially in a box by the till. Come try it and together we’ll see what happens.

And, while our lentil experiment goes on, we hope you’ll join us for the following events—and also for lunch, dinner, weekend brunch or just a coffee or a drink. Here’s what’s happening in September:

Art on our Walls

Peeling into Skin: A (mostly) paper doll show by Suzy Stroet

The fabulous paper doll is still gracing us with her presence, and may have some new outfits soon!

Sugarbeach Wedding Announcement

Written on August 31st, 2007 by Editorno shouts

SugarbeachLesbian Quarterly is proud to congratulate Marlee and Tully of Sugarbeach on their wedding, happening as LQ is going to ‘press’ on September 1st 2007.

The Vancouver-based lesbian pop duo met in Australia where Canadian Marlee Walchuck recruited Australian corporate accountant Tully Callender into her ‘real job’ as a musican. The couple returned to Vancouver and performed recently at this summer’s pride festival. They have just released their debut single “I Just Love Girls”.

Marlee has been in the lesbian music scene for some time, starting with membership in 80’s rock/pop band ‘Mistress’, popular in the Vancouver area. Mistress - click on the picture to see large version

Her mainstream experience in the music industry is extensive, starting with her first public live performances with siblings Judy Ginn and Jim Walchuk at the age of 14 – facing 16,000 fans at the Vancouver Coliseum.  She was a regular on the CBC Variety hit “The Judy & Jim Show.” She balanced her club performances with her studio singing for commercials such as McDonalds and BC Lotto, and television appearances on popular programs like The Vancouver show, The Irish Rovers, The Nice Show and many others.

Various duo and trio led to Marlee’s single act which won “Battle of Vancouver’s Best Solo Rock Acts” and a hit single which won 1st prize in the Canadian Song Festival and was on the Canadian A Playlist for 6 months.

Marlee’s album “One More Chance” was released and she toured Canada and Germany playing to crowds of up to 10,000 people. She was nominated for 5 BCCMA awards and won Best Vocalist in 1999.

In 2001, Marlee decided to head down to the land of kangaroos, crocodiles and the endless summer and brought her musical talent as keyboardist and vocalist to Safari, the girls-only cover band born out of Australia style’s famous Party Girls. Marlee’s R&B covers blew the roof off everywhere Safari played and the band leader, Faye Reid, was quoted as saying “I was so busy listening to that voice, I almost forgot to play”.

Tully joined Marlee to form Sugarbeach this year leaving behind her corporate career in Sydney. Tully, who has always had her hand in some musical project or another, from saxophone player in a Jazz band to vocal & piano performances at the Sydney Opera House Town Hall, now focuses on Sugarbeach as her full time gig.

Po GirlPO’GIRL
A sold-out crowd waits in semi-darkness. Outside, a van pulls up and five beautiful rag-tag misfits carrying all manner of instruments saunter through the back door. They head unapologetically, past the frantic promoter, and onto the stage.

Po’Girl starts the show. In typical Po’Girl fashion. On time…and at the last minute.

Po’Girl is made up of Allie, Awna, Trish, John and Diona. Their strength is in the power of gentle. This is very compelling.

Po’Girl started innocently enough back in 2002 when Allie and Trish, then flophouse room-mates in East Vancouver, formed a duo. Their sole intent: singing ‘creaky old jazz songs’.

Two years later, the duo found they had become, among other things, a five piece band of multi-instrumentalists. Signed to Nettwerk Records (their first album Vagabond Lullabies came out in 2004), these folk festival darlings soon were headlining venues of enviable size and sharing stages with the likes of David Byrne, Richie Havens, Ani DiFranco, Michael Franti, Utah Philips and Penny Lang.

Home to You, Po’Girl’s new record has captured the breezy, summer night feeling that their live show evokes. And thematically, it seems that the last two years of solid touring have had an effect. Most of the new material is about travel, longing and the notion of ‘home’. All self-confessed former ‘teen-age runaways’, it appears that Po’ Girl has found their new ‘home’- together, driving down a winding road in Shaggy the Love Van. The songs have become gorgeous documentations of this feeling.

Truly a collective effort, Home to You features songs written and delivered by each band member. Po’ Girl boasts no official ‘front man’. Everyone gets a turn. And as the band expands in size, (Diona joined in ‘03, Awna in ‘05 and studio engineer John became the official tour drummer in ‘04) it does the same in proficiency. The result is that many more musical styles weave their way into this fellowship known as Po’ Girl.

Po’ Girl finds devout fans wherever they go. And the word is spreading. Anyone who is attracted to the age-old universal story of a ‘rag-tag down-on-their-luck group of misfits who bands together to take over the world’ will surely find a home here. And who doesn’t like that story? www.pogirl.net www.myspace.com/pogirls

Leela GildayLEELA GILDAY

Born and raised in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, Leela has come to appreciate the heartbeat of life, and how it resonates through our experiences. Her songwriting reflects all those things. “I love to sing- I feel like the voice is a human birthright and it should be used often-I think people respond to my voice the way they respond to any instrument- with powerful feelings.” Leela has a lot of family and friend-style support and has won a remarkable number of awards for an independent Dene artist from the north.

Leela recently released her second full-length album, “SEDZE”  and It’s no surprise to her loyal fans and friends, “SEDZE” won the 2007 JUNO  for Aboriginal Recording of the Year. Contgratulations LEELA!

JUNO WIN…..
What Leela had to say …
Holy smokes.
I won the Juno for Aboriginal Recording of the Year. It’s weird to think about winning something in this way- all the other nominees in the category (Northern Cree, Digging Roots, Susan Aglukark, and Jason Burnstick) are super musicians and super people. So in a way, we’re all winners. After thanking my folks and my friends, and Teppei and the Canada Council, I accepted the award on all of our behalf, practically bawling my eyes out. I know- *puke* – how cheesy.

The thing is, I meant it. From the bottom of my shocked and overwhelmed heart.

Respect & Love

Summer 2007 Issue

Written on May 30th, 2007 by Editorno shouts

Rosie the riveter. This quarter we’re talking about favourite lesbian owned and women-owned businesses in BC. Also see our usual features the Lesbian Agenda, and Ongoing Lesbian Events. I’ve also catalogued all the lesbian-owned and women-owned businesses mentioned on the site, and you can see all of them by clicking on the links above, at lower right, or at the bottom of some articles. As well, we have an article about the new out and proud lesbian dragonboat team, Sisters in Synch and about Lesbians in the News. A special welcome to Lesbian Quarterly supporting business and psychotherapist Linda Dame, now featured on the Ongoing Lesbian Events page.

In case I don’t get the review written in time, my new favourite book with lesbian characters is Fire Logic, part of the ‘Elemental Logic’ series by Laurie J Marks. The central love story is between two women, set in a culture which seems to be flexible in it’s family structures and much lower in sexism than our own. The lesbian and gay and straight romances are woven into a story full of intuition, magic, integrity and bravery. Okay, I’m a computer nerd and like sci-fi and fantasy, which isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but really, spending some time in this world is good for the soul. I read it twice. In a row. Fortunately, the third book in the series is due out this July.

In Other Words – Lesbians in the News

Written on May 30th, 2007 by Editorno shouts

The achievements of lesbians do get reported in the news. They aren’t always labeled as or celebrated as lesbians, which is a pity, since I believe it’s credible to assume that our successes, when made public, help break down public stereotypes about lesbians.

I found two recent articles about lesbians doing great things but not actually labelled as lesbians. At ‘post time’ I wasn’t able to reach the second woman (who got Vancouver Sun coverage) to get her permission to ‘out’ her as a lesbian (if that’s how she identifies) here. I encourage you to add links in the comments to recent news stories featuring lesbians (labelled or not). Please be conscious of avoiding ‘outing’ someone against her will.

Here’s a story in Xtra west about the Quirk-E queer seniors writing and media group, co-led by Claire Robson, an occasional contributor to LQ.

Speaking with Claire recently, she noted that she was “the only woman recipient of the Xtra west heros award this year”. She won the award for Writer of the Year for her work with Quirk-e.

Favourite Women-Owned Businesses

Written on May 27th, 2007 by Editor8 shouts

I was sitting in one of my favourite restaurants, a little diner within walking distance of my house called Docker’s Diner. Joanne Agreometros, the owner, came by as usual to chat with my wife Jeanette and I and we got talking about how she started the place. “My friends thought I was nuts.” she said. She had twelve years of experience in her field and they thought she should just get another job.

The first two years were hardest. The location, in one of the oldest parts of the city, with cobblestone streets and heritage brick buildings nearby, has a lot of charm but as yet, low foot traffic, being surrounded mostly by factories and industrial use buildings.

Joanne has made this difficulty into an asset by building community. One summer, Joanne went around personally to all the businesses in the area and introduced herself. She buys her ingredients where possible from local butchers and grocers and doesn’t mind if customers bring in a cup of coffee from nearby JJ Beans. Her casual style diner has become a favourite among the construction workers and longshoremen in the area, so much so that she has to do refinishing work on the floor every summer to recover from a winter of workboots.

Four years after opening, Docker’s is thriving. The retro-style diner is clean and well-managed, open from 7am to 3 pm. Joanne, a straight woman, is definitely lesbian friendly, and reserved a table for breakfast for our wedding party the morning of our wedding last year.

Talking to Joanne got me thinking about all the great women-owned businesses I know of so I started asking around for recommendations. Here’s what I’ve got so far. I invite you to add your recommendations below.

twowomenssymbolsJessica Brown, a traditional chinese medicine and registered acupuncturist, has a practice in New Westminster and was recommended by her wife Kirn.

The Dragon and Unicorn was recommended by Carol Stewart – “Jackson Berger and her partner Kathy Lewis have The Dragon and Unicorn Farm in Roberts Creek on the Sunshine Coast.  It is a 4 acre rhododendron farm and art gallery.  Kathy is a surperb woodworker.  They are also very active raising funds and paddling for the Breast Cancer Dragon Boats.  2348 Sunshine Coast Highway, Roberts Creek.”

Carol notes that “I read the local weekly paper and found that one person has complained that Dragon and Unicorn is contravening an old bylaw that states a home-based business must only sell things they actually produce themselves.  Their gallery promotes local artists and artisans.  It seems that only one complaint is enough to stop the business!  Many people are supporting Kathy and Jackson; I hope they will be given special permission to continue.  In the meantime, any publicity or awards will surely help. ”

Susan Yeager and Diane Driver of Dreamweaver productions have been hosting and providing music services for the over 30’s women’s dance crowd for years, including an affordable and community-style pride dance at the Vancouver Rowing Club each year.

The Rhizome Cafe, owned by life-partners Lisa Moore and Vinetta Lenavat, profiled last quarter. They’re just completing their first year of business and are a great cafe that could use your support – I suggest people go in and eat lots of their good food.  Their weekend brunches are my favourite.

The Roundel Cafe – On Hastings just west of Nanaimo, the Roundel has been purchased and re-opened by new owners Dena Sananin and husband Mick. The atomosphere, food and pricing is a tiny bit upscale of the usual east side diner cafe, but includes free-range eggs and fancier salads along with vegetarian classics like tofu scramble and homemade veggie burgers. She also gets her supplies in the neighbourhood.

Other great women-owned businesses include Commercial Drive’s – Sophie’s Pet Palace (lesbian owned) – which sells pet food and supplies. Mary Brooks, the owner, was sponsor of the Sophie’s Bitches softball team in Vancouver’s lesbian Mabel League. It’s All Fun and Games in the next block is owned by two women and sells a nice selection of quality children’s toys and books. Urban Empire sells lots of kitchy and irreverent items from rubber chickens, political buttons and the Rosie the Riveter action figure pictured above. Of course there are also the lesbian-owned and women-owned businesses already mentioned or profiled in Lesbian Quarterly.

I know there are lots of other women-owned businesses out there. If you have one to recommend (please say why) I invite you to comment on this article below. (To avoid spam, all comments will be approved by a human being before showing up). Click here to read all the great comments we have already (!).
