Hey Sophia!
Hope you gals are doing well!

We thought we’d send you this as it might interesting to you.
We have just written and recorded this years’ theme song for Vancouver Pride 2008, “Living Out Proud”. Vancouver will be using it for the kick off of events and media liaisons as well as in the parade. So far 7 other major cities around the world have also decided to use it…some have put it on their website already. The cities include, Seattle, Ottawa, Charlotte, North Carolina (where we will be performing at their pride in July), Toronto (it looks like Proud FM may be playing it as well) , Kentucky and Cornwall, UK. We are totally jazzed by the great response we have gotten.

We have given it to them for free to use however they need it and it is also downloadable for free on our myspace page.

“Living Out Proud” is a celebration of Pride as well as an encouragement for LGBT people to come out in every aspect of their lives and we’re hoping it also reaches the ears and the hearts of those in prominent positions whose coming out, we feel, could make such a positive impact on the lives and rights of LGBT people everywhere.

So there you go!
Chat soon…thanks,

Marlee and Tully
from SUGARBEACH

Cyndi has released 11 albums, over 40 singles and has sold more than 25 million records worldwide. She has been nominated for 13 Grammy Awards, 2 Emmy Awards, 2 American Music Awards, 7 American Video Awards, and 18 MTV awards.

As an actor, Cyndi has appeared in such features as Mrs. Parker and the Vicious Circle (Fine Line/Mirimax), Life With Mikey (Touchstone), Off and Running (Independent), Vibes (Columbia/Imagine) and opposite Christopher Walken in her critically acclaimed dramatic role in The Opportunist (Independent). Television credits include Queer as Folk (2005), Live and Kicking and Noel’s House Party (both for the BBC) and her Emmy Award Winning performance (Outstanding Guest Performance in a Comedy Series) as Marianne Lugasso on Mad About You (94-99). Cyndi also has lent her talents to other film and TV projects, voicing animated projects for Disney and The Simpsons as well as scoring soundtracks for the films Off and Running and Private Property, and the title song for Nick Cassavete7#39;s, Unhook The Stars. Cyndi made her Broadway debut in 2006, in the role of Jenny in The Threepenny Opera.

A devoted advocate for the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) community for over 25 years, Cyndi Lauper launched the annual True Colors Tour in 2007. In partnership with organizations like the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) and Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG), this North American tour brings people together to voice their solidarity for GLBT equality and raise awareness about the continued discrimination the community still faces. From Cyndi and her openly gay sister, Elen, taking part in a highly successful national public awareness campaign for PFLAG to participating in countless events to raise funds and awareness for the fight for GLBT equality, Cyndi is committed to this vital community that has loved and supported her throughout her career. In appreciation for her work, Cyndi has been honored by many organizations including HRC, PFLAG, and the Matthew Shepard Foundation.

Cyndi also is a tireless participant in the struggle to end the HIV/AIDS pandamic that has ravaged the world. Participating in efforts and events for organizations like AMFAR, Broadway Cares Equity Fights AIDS, the Gay Men’s Health Crisis, Cyndi continues to speak out about the need for education and greater resources to fight this disease

This weeks’ Xtra west did an excellent cover story about queer women in music, and why so many of them aren’t publicly self identifying as queer or lesbian or putting queer/lesbian content in their music.

Young lesbian and queer women artists are quoted as saying they don’t want to be ‘pidgeonholed’ as queer by representing themselves in the media as lesbian or writing about lesbian experience. While not exactly closeted, if the majority of their fans have no reason to know they’re not straight, they will be assumed to be straight.

Musicians and other public figures passing for straight is nothing new. Queer artists like KD Lang, the Nylons, George Michaels and Elton John also passed for straight in their early careers. While not needing the deep closet of gay actor Rock Hudson or US Congresswomen Barbara Jordan, who were outed only after their deaths, many young lesbian and queer artists are choosing to represent themselves as straight by not declaring otherwise. Would kd or the Nylons have been as successful as they have been if they had come out early in their careers? We’ll know that gay and lesbian people have reached full equality when creating art about our own experiences no longer reduces our career success.

But why are musicians looking for less mainstream audiences not out and proud? Lesbian musical matriarch Cris Williamson is quoted as saying that it’s all just a part of an artistic pendulum, and that much younger women, currently 12 or 13 have swung back towards being more political, and that gives her hope. I think she’s got a point here. Cris’ words put me in mind of an 80’s TV show starring Michael J Fox as the Republican teenage son of progressive activist parents. His parents were so political, there was no way to differentiate himself from them without embracing the conservative values they’d fought. Perhaps the current generation of lesbian and queer women artists are reacting to their musical foremothers in a similar way, choosing to be apolitical or pass for straight in order to be nothing like the lesbian musicians who preceeded them. One can only hope that their musical daughters will feel an equal need to do something different.

Near’s career as a singer has been profoundly defined by an unwillingness to separate her passion for music from her passion for human dignity. Her voice soars as she sings about that which she knows & has experienced. You can feel and see the passion, the knowing in her voice and in her body.

Holly was one of the first woman artists to start an independent record company when she founded Redwood Records in 1972 which became a major force in alternative music for nearly 20 years. Near’s vision for Redwood was to promote and produce music by politically conscious artists from around the world, a mission fulfilled for almost two decades.

Near worked for world peace and multi-cultural consciousness. The world was her university and social change movements informed her songs. Near helped support the work of artists from Nicaragua, Chile, Australia, Canada, England, Argentina, Cuba, Uruguay, Vietnam, El Salvador, Mexico, and the United States. She was outspoken on such issues as gay and lesbian rights, a woman’s right to choose, stopping domestic violence, and opposing nuclear war.

A peace activist and advocate for human and civil rights, Holly has linked the multitude of issues that are our lives, refusing the idea of separate “causes.” When asked how she keeps her energy for this work, she smiles: “I am selfish. I reach for the world I want to live in. And I believe in leaving our best efforts as a gift to our children.”

EMMA’S REVOLUTION

Dancing on the edge of folk and pop there’s a revolution: Emma’s revolution. The sound of passion in “deftly-turned phrases,” songs imbued with hope, warmth and the “power and drive” to turn tears into laughter, cynicism into action.

EMMA’S REVOLUTION is the duo of award-winning, activist musicians, Pat Humphries & Sandy O, who write songs that become traditions. Their song,“If I Give Your Name” won Grand Prize in the John Lennon Songwriting Contest and their music has been featured on NPR’s “All Things Considered” and Pacifica’s “Democracy Now!”. “Peace, Salaam, Shalom” is sung around the world and has been called the “anthem of the anti-war movement.” “Keep On Moving Forward” opened the NGO Forum at the UN Fourth World Conference on Women in Bejiing, becoming the unofficial theme of the Conference.

“The powers that be can control the media but it’s hard to stop a good song… Pat’s songs will be sung well into the 22nd century.”

WE CAME TO SING! is Holly Near & Emma’s Revolution new CD. Get a copy on October 30th!!

Holly and emma’s revolution put their unique vocal stamp on songs from Holly’s repertoire. Eleven tracks include old favorites such as Listen to the Voices, Sky Dances, and Fired Up along with new arrangements of Study War No More and Sail Away Lady, Pat Humphries’ Swimming to the Other Side, and Rick Burkhardt’s (The Prince Myshkins) Ministry.

Vancouver first embraced Ani DiFranco in 1992, when she made her debut appearance at the Vancouver Folk Music Festival. Audiences fell head over heels for the feisty young singer-songwriter full of dynamic pizzazz. Armed with only a guitar, talent and a brain she kicked in the door for a generation of followers.

Twenty-some recordings (all on her own Righteous Babe label) and innumerable shows later, the little folk singer that could returns to Vancouver with a couple of pals. She’ll play songs from her latest release, the brilliant New Orleans-infused Red Letter Year, and selections from both ones that came before and new songs from a writer who never stops writing.

Whether the subject is politics or the foibles of being human, this is an artist who continues to deliver honesty, excellence and a few surprises. Seventeen years after her Vancouver debut, Ani DiFranco remains at the top of her game – a significant, outspoken and creatively ingenious artist who just keeps getting better and better.

June at Rhizome Café * Community Space * Arts Venue 317 East Broadway, Vancouver

Dear Friends of Rhizome-

Happy summer to all! In addition to hoping you’ll join us for the events mentioned below, we have a few announcements:

- Wireless: Rhizome now offers free wireless internet, available at all times except during weekend brunch (too busy!) and evening events (pay attention!) This is a nice place to sit and work, especially during the afternoons when things are relatively quiet here.

- Volunteer Needed: We’re looking for a volunteer to help us transport our compost. We deliver our compost-able kitchen scraps to a community garden near Commercial Drive, but are finding it difficult to do so regularly. We would be very grateful to any volunteer with reliable transportation who already travels regularly from east to west and back again, and who could come by about three times a week to pick up our veggies and drop them off at the garden. If you’re interested, please respond to this email.

- Office Space for Rent: You may have noticed that the building next door to us at the corner of Scotia and East Broadway is undergoing massive renovations. Part of it has already been rented out to Starbucks (just what we all need!) but the remaining three suites have yet to be rented. We would love it if community groups, arts organizations, creative folk, etc. became our new neighbours, rather than more corporate junk. We have no idea how much the rent is, but the building is slated to open in July and the available suites range in size from 1,100 to 2,800 square feet. Any groups interested in office space should email the developer directly: peteruyassociates [at] shaw [dot] ca.

We won! Rhizome was awarded a HERO Award at Xtra West’s Community Achievement Awards ceremony. Thanks again to all who nominated us.

- Summer Vacation: The Rhizome staff is taking a break from June 28th through July 4th. We will be closed that entire week, reopening on Saturday, July 5th.

We hope to see you at the various events listed below! Also, remember that we’re open for delicious lunch, dinner, weekend brunch, snacks and drinks. Our complete hours are listed at the end of this message. And let us know if you’d like to use our Community Meeting Room for your group’s activities. You can check our website for more information on what we do and how we do it: http://www.rhizomecafe.ca/.

Events We’re Supporting Beyond These Four Walls

Here are a couple of events happening in the upcoming weeks, both of which are part of ongoing campaigns. We think they are important to support, and encourage everyone to attend these events and/or pass on the word.

Rally against Bill C-50

Sunday, June 1, 2:00pm

In Centralcity Shopping Centre (north entrance by SFU Surrey Tower), 13450 102nd Avenue Surrey (between 134th and 135th Street), 1 short block from Surrey Central Skytrain Station.

Recently the Conservative government introduced a series of amendments to the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act buried in Bill C-50. Under the proposed changes, even if someone meets the necessary-already stringent-criteria for a visa, the Minister and her department can reject the application without any Court review. The Minister will also have the power to issue quotas and restrictions on the category (including Family Class and Economic Class immigrants) and country of origin of people.

Golden Gag Award “Ceremony” and Protest

Friday, June 6, 12:00

Granville Square, 200 Granville Street

Demand that CanWest drop its groundless lawsuit against Mordecai Briemberg! In a direct attack on freedom of expression, Canwest has launched an unprecedented civil lawsuit against solidarity activist Mordecai Briemberg and 6 other anonymous persons. In June 2007, marking the 40th anniversary of the illegal Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories, an anonymous group produced a parody edition of Canwest’s Vancouver Sun. Canwest is pursuing legal action against Briemberg despite their written admission that they have no documentation connecting him with the production of the parody. Regardless of individuals’ opinions on the Israel/Palestine issue, we are concerned that this lawsuit is an attack on all of us who dare speak out against the status quo.
A note on our name:

In the botanical sense, a rhizome is a root system that some plants (like lilies and orchids and ginger and bamboo) use to spread themselves about. While the roots of most plants point generally downward, the rhizome is a horizontal root system that runs parallel to the surface of the ground. The plant sends shoots up from nodes in the rhizome, creating what look like many separate plants. These seemingly unrelated individuals are actually all connected, through a system that’s not immediately visible to the eye.
